She’s Not Homeless

August 23, 2009 by admin

She was still groggy.  I saw her shift into the kitchen, listlessly.  The faucet quickly supplied what sounded like a very small glass of water.  The cats outnumber the dogs under this house.  I sat near what appeared to be the cat room looking in at the hissing occupants as they assumed I was there to scrap, yet all I wanted was for her to let me in so I could play too.  She keeps feeding me, but I have never managed to make it inside the house.  She slips out quickly and closes the door behind her, and that’s when I usually miss my opportunity.  One of these days she’ll get herself locked out of the house.  I hope it’s today.

As I hastily consumed the veritable smorgasbord of kibbles and bits that I had been offered, as I was every day this strange creature existed here, I noticed the panic on her face, and the lack of pants.  Trust me, even though I’m menacing and appear large as I perch on people’s window sills, I am adept, agile, and very, very intelligent.  I laughed inside.  It was a purrfect moment.  I had wished that she would lock herself out for not allowing me in, and she did.  HA! HA!

Scamper scamper…

[Note: Cats don’t usually stick around long enough to divulge all of the information.  See her perspective here if you’d like to know the rest of the story.]

Tahoe Notes

February 23, 2009 by admin

My mother was an avid journalist…is that the right way to say it?  She would journal all of the details of a road trip when I was younger so we would have an accurate record of what happened.  I would join in sometimes.

This entry is a blast from my past.  On this particular trip we wrote in what was then a $0.39 notebook.

Tahoe Notes

The Way to Get Home (to the condo)

  1. Turn on Fairway
  2. Turn left on Harold
  3. Turn left on Wendy

How to get to Northstar

  1. Turn right on Wendy
  2. Turn right on Harold
  3. Turn right on Fairway
  4. Turn right on North Shore Blvd.
  5. Turn left on North Star Drive.
  6. Get stuck behind many cars.
  7. Turn into North Star

I have always been detail oriented :).

Friday March 12, 1982

Plane leave phx 1:40, stopover in Las Vegas.  Arrives Reno 2:55.  Nice flight – crowded.  $100 / adult, $65 / Jon.  Curgie’s car in Parking Lot.  Gas $1.19 just before Tahoe turnoff.  Arrived Tahoe 4:30, unloaded car and went to Ski Loft to rent skiis.  Very Crowded but having 1/2 price sale.  Things seem to be cheaper here than Phoenix.  Bought food – Raley’s.  Dinner at Stanley’s, ribs, fish, liver.  Phil says sauteed liver best ever!  Ribs good, Jon’s fish excellent.  Too much food (doggie bag) $40 or under.  Jon played games (Pac Man.)

This is the gist of what my mother would always write on our trips.  The pages go on and on, documenting every little detail so there would be a better way next time, I suppose.  On one of the pages, I managed to entertain myself by drawing a Pacman board, giving myself the high score and my opponent a pathetic score, and of course, I had all of the fruit on the bottom of the screen :).

I know, boring.

Cubed

February 9, 2009 by admin

It’s tight, small, and feels like there are no windows or doors, and the light switch appears to be broken.  I flipped it one way and the next, but it offered no resistance and made no sounds.  The ceiling above me, the wall to the left of me, and another to the right feel course, as though covered in self-adhering sand paper squares, each spaced apart by a few inches, or centimeters.  The floor, moist and slick, seems to prevent any semblance of balance, as though someone had sprayed a fine mist of oil over it’s surface.  As I stand, I slip and fall, and I am reminded of why I am in this little room.  The thoughts of the darkness and emptiness creep in once again, swirling around my cowering shape in the corner of this confining cube.  I am trapped.  Unable to see, I have no idea if there is anything else in the room.  Hours and hours of searching have led me across every inch of this place and yet even though I’ve discovered a window, it has been covered with a thick rubbery substance, almost as though someone has painted multiple coats of black paint over and over again.  It is strong, and I am unable to dig through.  I find one small pixel of light shining through the surface, evidence of hope in a universe where hope seems scarce.  Grooves on the border of each wall stretch the length of each of the 6 sides only an inch from the corners.  I fall asleep.

The room has changed size.  It appears to be alive.  The walls are closer than they were before.  The window is smaller.  My upper body has been scraped raw in the night from where I had been leaning.  There is no room in this living, breathing room anymore and I want out.

The rest?  They’re all locked up in their own little box with their own past experiences and they seem overshadowed by the familiarity that is just on the other side of that little pixel of light.  How can something that feels so right one day feel so wrong the next?  Waking up day after day in this abrasive cube is just as comforting as it is terrifying.

Instant Coffee is a Beautiful Thing

August 10, 2005 by admin

Instant coffee, a beautiful thing,
It makes me laugh, it makes me sing,
It makes my heart go pingle-dee-ping,
much faster than it should.

Instant coffee, a beautiful sight,
It makes me restless through the night,
It pumps my blood likes thieves in flight,
much faster than it should.

Instant coffee, a wonderful drink,
It makes my mouth develop a stink,
It slithers when washed away in the sink,
much faster than it should.

Instant coffee, a beautiful drug,
It makes me happy when poured in a mug,
and down the old gullet it slips with a glug,
much faster than it should.

Instant coffee, you ought to try
I can’t much offer reasons why
But when don’t have it, you’ll rush to the store,
much faster than you should.

I have recently discovered instant coffee. For some reason, the entire concept has eluded me for years. I have been drinking coffee for about 5 years now, and I usually picked it up at the local convenient store or Starbucks, but now I have changed my outlook.  I have had my first cup of instant coffee, and it tastes just as good as any other type of coffee I have had, for less than I was spending before.
