Brandon Stark, our good friend at New Valley Church, will be competing in this Sunday’s Arizona Ironman competition:
Timeline of Events – Note, due to unknown circumstances, we actually have absolutely no way to know how well Brandon will perform. So your best bet is to reserve as much time as you can to cope with parking, which will inevitably be a standard Tempe Town Lake disaster. Carpooling recommended. We do know that it’s critical for him that we be there for the finish, which we estimate will occur around 5:00PM.
4:30AM – 5:00AM Brandon, Steve, Jon, and any others who brave the early morning depart from Brandon’s house and head towards Tempe Town Lake.
5:00 AM – Roughly 6:40 AM
This is where the anticipation of the event builds and the excitement seems contagious. Thousands of athletes and spectators buzz about preparing for the race and supporting their racers.
6:40 AM – 7:00 AM
Adrenaline reaches it’s peak as the racers focus intensely on the impending race. Most racers will be either entering the water or will already have been in the water.
7:00 AM, RACE TIME
All participants face off in a huge field of swimmers. Spectators watch from above on the Mill Avenue Bridge.
We anticipate, based on Brandon’s current condition, that he’ll complete the swim approximately one hour and 10 minutes to one hour and 30 minutes after 7:00 AM, with the transition from swim to bike taking place somewhere in the neighborhood of 8:10 – 8:30AM. This is a rough estimate.
The bike portion of the race is 112 miles at a rate of about 20MPH average, which lands him in transition two, from bike to run somewhere around 1:00 PM.
The run is where he’ll need the most support, and he should pass by us around 4 to 6 times over the course of the remainder of the race. The run is 26.2 miles.
How You Can Support
Be there for the run. We’re setting up a tent on the south shore of Tempe Town Lake near the Mill Avenue Bridge alongside Brandon’s coach’s rig. We’ll have food and beverages and will be spending the entire run in the great outdoors enjoying the atmosphere. There will be lots of things to do and lots of friends to meet and greet.
