Arizona Ironman 2010

December 2, 2010 by admin

The morning of the race wasn’t nearly as cold as last year, and the day would unfold with an amazing wind, and beautiful skies, along with some heavy showers for brief moments.  It’s not a perfect chronicle of the day’s events, but a fun video to make, nonetheless.  Enjoy.

Ford Arizona Ironman 2009 Training Entry

March 15, 2009 by admin

It was officially my second attempt at my first loop of the Beeline Highway. The first attempt was cut short due to time and flat tires on Brandon’s bike. His wheels require tubes with longer stems, so mine were of no use to him. After the incident we went back home and did some workout and abs with the home ab machines.

Road Trippin’

November 28, 2008 by admin

About 3 hours into it the road began to look long and narrow, like peeking through a rolled up piece of paper to focus in on something of perceived importance. The eyes grew heavy and all I could do to remain awake was scratch my head and rub my face, wishing I had something to munch on to keep my brain occupied. She offered to drive, but I said I was okay.  I knew that it would be a short while before I’d be back on track and alert as I remembered that there was a bag of sun flower seeds waiting for me. But, without a cup, sun flower seeds get messy, so I set my sights on a cup of coffee. On long road trips sleep begins to manifest at about the 2 hour mark, but a few tools have been put into place to prevent disaster. I don’t know why it happens, but it does. Perhaps it has something to do with the dashes. Dash, dash, dash. Endless painted lines streaming through the center of my way, flashing, dashing, blinking, over and over again. And the power lines, suspended by giant toothpicks that manage to survive the elements for years and years, one after another, all the same…

…New Mexico. Not my idea of one of the most beautiful places on earth, but hey, you can buy fireworks there. Oh, and you can find aliens, so I’ve heard. Hogwash. The better parts of New Mexico are as the better parts of Arizona. High mountain country with pines and cool weather, clouds that wash the heavens and are so close you can reach up and grab them, like fluffy cotton candy. Roads aren’t laid out like they are in Phoenix with perpendicularized intersections and easy to figure addresses. They roll and bend and turn, every once in a while stretching out for a long climb or swiftly swooping up and around the edge of a mountain. Don’t drive off the edge however.  It’s a long way down…

Coffee, food, sun-flower seeds, and good company make for what one would consider an agonizing drive much more pleasant, and upon reflection, rather quick.  Here we are Ruidoso!

Ford Arizona Ironman 2009

November 24, 2008 by admin

Word has it that Brandon Stark and Steve Poirot have both made a committment to compete in next year’s Ford Arizona Ironman 2009.  The most recent concluded yesterday, Sunday November 23rd, where Steve spent the day volunteering.  Unfortunately I was unable to volunteer even though it was my intention.  Alas, I had to hold an open house for my new listing in Phoenix.  The open house was successful.

Prior to this year, the Ironman took place in April, which proved to be very hot and very windy.  This was the first year in which two events were held in order to recalibrate.  The event will continue every year now in November rather than April.  Last april I shot a video of my friend Brandon Stark competing.  It was quite an event.  You can view the Amateur Start on this page as well as Brandon’s Video posted to Facebook.

So, another 364 days from now, Steve and Brandon will embark on yet another torturous day of cardiovascular mayhem, and the great part about it is that somehow I have been recruited to be a training partner!  Yeesh.  Onward to good health I suppose.

Following up Getting Around Phoenix

July 11, 2008 by admin

Steve Belt of Real Phoenix Living recently posted an article about getting around in Phoenix which promted this response:

The bulk of my youth youth (I say that because I’m relatively young to some) was spent on a bicycle and in a car.  On a bike because I delivered newspaper, and in a car because I delivered Pizza, for 3 different companies over time.  I also delivered a USA Today route in my car in 1991.  Addresses are very easy for me to find which is why I’ll typically ask someone for the address and only the address to find my way.  They’ll still explain the “lefts” and the “rights” but it usually goes in one ear and out the other.  I can find my way around anywhere.  Since most of the east/west streets in Phoenix are named rather than numbered, the only bit of research that I need to conduct is how far north or south that street is relative to a major intersection.  Being a native Arizonan makes it fairly easy to know the major streets.  You say between Cactus and Thunderbird and I’ll find it with the address.

Where it gets confusing is where cities overlap.  One example will be Broadway road in Mesa/Tempe.  Tempe follows the same pattern as Phoenix in numbering their addresses, and so does mesa, but there’s a point on an east/west street where the address shifts from east to west or west to east based on the city you’re in, and as a result, the numbers increment in a different direction.  Make sure you know what city you’re in, then you can find anything.

Another observation is that typically any address that ends in 02 is on a northeast corner, and any address that ends in 01 is on a southeast corner.  On Yucca, for example, the address 2702 E. Yucca indicates first that it’s at 27th Street.  We know it’s street because it’s east and there are no streets west of Central, rather Avenues.  The E is a big clue that it’s east of Central.  🙂  Yucca tells you little about how far north and south the street may be, so you’d have to know the area or look it up.  By the time everyone gets around to that, we’ll all have GPS Navigation in our cars.

So, the 27 means 27th street, and the 02 means it’s the first address on the north side of the street just east of 27th, typically a corner.  2701 E. Yucca would be right across the street.  2636 E. Yucca would be on the north side of the street, most likely just west of 27th street on the other corner.

Sometimes an east/west street has no north/south street bisecting it.  Let’s say a northbound 27th Street ended in a “T” at Yucca.  In this case, there would be no northeast corner, but the house straight ahead or just to the right would still be numbered 2702 E. Yucca because Yucca crosses the 27th Street line.  Sometimes there’s not even a “T” and Yucca would have no bisecting north south street…but the addresses are still reset to 01 and 02 where Yucca crosses the north/south street’s line.

Confused yet?  It’s all the same when you’re talking about north/south streets.

There are flaws in the system, however, and they typically show up in areas where a townhome development on the corner of an intersection spans multiple streets.  One area of the development will have a north/south address and the unit just next to you will have an east/west address.  It’s very confusing in this case.  I happen to live in one of those areas :).

I am hoping that your head didn’t just explode.
